The KMC Final-Out Cleaning Checklist
This is the room-by-room checklist we use on real final-out jobs around Ramstein, Landstuhl and Kaiserslautern. It covers on-base housing and off-base German rentals, including the items that fail inspections most often. Print it, work through it, and use it to hold any cleaner accountable, including us.
We confirm every request within 2 business hours.

Why most families fail their first inspection
Almost nobody fails because they were lazy. They fail because they cleaned the surfaces they can see and missed the ones an inspector is trained to check. Window tracks, Rolladen slats, the top of wall cabinets, the seal inside the oven door, and limescale on shower heads are not obvious unless someone tells you.
The second reason is sequencing. Cleaning before the movers arrive means the empty house gets scuffed and dusty again on move-out day. Clean after the household goods are gone, leave a buffer day, then inspect.
Kitchen
The kitchen decides more inspections than any other room. Work top to bottom.
- Oven: racks, glass door including between the panes, seals, and the broiler pan
- Stovetop: burners, drip pans, control knobs and the gap beside the counter
- Range hood: grease filter washed or replaced, housing degreased
- Refrigerator and freezer: emptied, defrosted, wiped inside, seals cleaned, rolled out and cleaned behind
- Dishwasher: filter, seals, spray arms, door edge
- All cabinets and drawers inside, outside, and on top of the wall units
- Countertops, backsplash and sink descaled, drain cleaned
- Floor mopped including under and behind every appliance
Bathrooms
Limescale is the theme here. German water in this region is hard, and inspectors know exactly where it hides.
- Shower head, hoses and faucets fully descaled
- Shower glass, tiles and grout, including the silicone joints
- Bathtub, including the overflow and the seal at the wall
- Toilet: bowl, rim, hinges, base and behind the pedestal
- Sink, drain, cabinet interior and mirror
- Extractor fan cover dusted, floor mopped into corners
- Any mold spots treated, not just wiped over

Windows, Rolladen and doors
The single most overlooked category in the KMC, and the easiest place to lose points.
- Window glass inside and outside, streak-free
- Frames wiped, tracks vacuumed then wiped, drainage slots clear
- Rolladen slats cleaned on both sides, plus the housing box lip
- Window sills inside and outside
- Doors, door frames, handles and the top edge of every door
- Fly screens rinsed if installed
Living areas, bedrooms and hallways
Empty rooms show everything, which cuts both ways.
- Walls checked for scuffs, marks spot-cleaned where the surface allows
- Light fixtures dusted, every burned-out bulb replaced
- Light switches and outlet covers wiped
- Radiators dusted, including between the fins
- Baseboards wiped along the whole run
- Closets and built-in wardrobes emptied and wiped inside
- Carpets vacuumed, then professionally cleaned where required
- Hard floors mopped, corners and edges included
Basement, storage, garage and outside
Off-base leases in particular list these areas, and German landlords do inspect them.
- Basement and storage room swept and wiped, nothing left behind
- Laundry area: washer and dryer wiped, lint trap cleaned, detergent drawer descaled
- Garage or carport swept, oil stains treated on the floor and driveway
- Balcony or patio swept, railings wiped, drains clear
- Garden left in the contracted condition, grass cut if the lease says so
- Trash and bulk waste removed, bins emptied and rinsed
- All keys accounted for, including mailbox, cellar and garage keys
On-base and off-base: what differs
Use the column that matches your housing type.
| Item | On-base housing | Off-base German rental |
|---|---|---|
| Standard applied | Housing office checklist | Lease terms plus „besenrein“ handover custom |
| Carpet cleaning | Often required with proof | Depends on lease, receipt still worth having |
| Garden and outdoor | Usually limited | Frequently included, check your contract |
| Repairs vs cleaning | Damage handled separately | Landlord may offset repairs against the deposit |
| What you risk | Failed inspection and rescheduling | Part or all of your security deposit |
How to use this checklist
- Print it before the movers come
Walk the house with it once while your goods are still in place, and note anything that needs a repair rather than a clean. - Fix the repair items early
Bulbs, small holes, and anything a landlord could call damage. Cleaning cannot solve those on inspection day. - Clean after the movers, not before
An empty house cleans faster and stays clean. Give yourself one buffer day before the inspection. - Do a backlight walkthrough
Check windows and floors against the light. Streaks and dust only show at an angle, and that is exactly how an inspector will see them.
Do not want to do this yourself?
That is the entire list, and it is roughly one to two full days of work for an average home if you are thorough. We do it as a flat-rate job with a written pass guarantee: if the inspection fails on something in our scope, we come back free.
Either way, the checklist is yours. Print it, share it with your unit, post it in your spouse group. It was written to be useful, not to be gated behind an email address.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a printable PDF version?
Yes, there is a download link on this page. The PDF has the same room-by-room structure with checkboxes and a separate column for on-base and off-base items, formatted to print on two pages. No email address required.
Is this the official housing office checklist?
No. This is our practical working list based on what we clean and what inspectors flag in this area. Always check the current official documents from your housing office as well, since standards and forms are updated periodically. Our list is designed to complement them, not replace them.
Question not answered here? Ask us directly, we reply within 2 business hours.
How long does a full final-out clean take if I do it myself?
For an average three-bedroom home in good condition, plan one to two full days with two people, assuming you already have the right products for limescale and oven grease. Rolladen, window tracks and the oven alone typically take three to four hours together.
What is besenrein and is it enough?
Besenrein means broom-clean, and it is the minimum handover standard in many German leases: no belongings left, swept floors, no gross soiling. It is rarely enough to protect a full deposit, because landlords still expect limescale-free bathrooms and a clean kitchen. Read your specific lease, since the clause varies.
